Raphael Warnock won his Senate race in Georgia & it’s looking good for Jon Ossoff

USA - 2021 - President-Elect Joe Biden drive-in rally on the eve of Georgia's Senate runoff election in Atlanta

Update by CB: Jon Ossoff has been declared the winner in his race as well, giving Democrats control of the Senate!

The Georgia runoff election for the state’s two Senate seats will determine the majority in the Senate. There’s so much at stake, it’s like the whole thing was scripted by Hollywood, complete with the two very attractive Democratic candidates, Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. Warnock, the Baptist pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, vying to be Georgia’s first Black senator. Ossoff, a 33-year-old well-educated Georgia native who interned for John Lewis and has steadily built his profile in Georgia politics. They were up against two awful incumbents, Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue. Even though Perdue and Loeffler have done nothing for Georgians and they were literally committing crimes in office, many predicted that they would win back their seats because, well, it’s Georgia. And it’s a special election without a big-name Democrat to drive voter turnout. Right? Wrong.

Enter Stacey Abrams, the gubernatorial candidate who saw Brian Kemp steal the governor’s race from her in 2018. Abrams stayed in Georgia and organized so that no state-wide candidate would have to deal with the voter suppression she faced in 2018. Abrams and many other organizers – many of them Black women – helped deliver Georgia for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in November. Abrams once again stayed on the ground for the Georgia runoff. And guess what? Historic turnout for a special election, with Ossoff and Warnock OUT-PERFORMING Biden’s numbers in November in many counties. Raphael Warnock is going to be the next senator from Georgia. And it’s looking good for Ossoff too!!

Democrats moved a major step closer to capturing control of the Senate on Wednesday morning as Georgia voters elected the Rev. Raphael Warnock, the pastor at the storied Ebenezer Baptist Church, in a hard-fought runoff contest that became roiled by President Trump’s false claims of voter fraud in the state.

Mr. Warnock’s victory over the Republican incumbent, Kelly Loeffler, was called by The Associated Press early Wednesday. It represented a landmark breakthrough for African-Americans in politics as well as for Georgia: He became the first Black Democrat elected to the Senate from the South.

For Democrats to take the Senate, which is crucial to enacting President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s first-term agenda, they also need to win Georgia’s other Senate runoff held on Tuesday. With an estimated 98 percent of votes counted in that race as of 4 a.m. Wednesday, the Republican candidate, David Perdue, trailed his Democratic rival, Jon Ossoff, by 12,806 votes.

Turnout in rural, overwhelmingly white counties where Republicans needed a strong showing was lagging without Mr. Trump on the ballot, and many of Georgia’s heavily Black localities saw turnout levels that neared those of the presidential race in November.

While Mr. Warnock’s win was a major gain for his party — he is the first Democrat to be elected to the Senate from Georgia since 2000 — both political parties remained on edge over the unresolved Ossoff-Perdue race and its implications for the next two years in American politics. Whichever party wins that race will control the Senate, with Republicans counting on Mr. Perdue to prevail and give them the ability to constrain Mr. Biden’s policy ambitions.

[From The NY Times]

As of this writing, Ossoff has a lead with about 98% of the vote in. If Ossoff wins his race by less than .5%, that triggers an automatic recount, which is a very real possibility. But… it’s looking really good. I’m hopeful. And I’m beyond pleased with Warnock’s victory!! Senator Warnock!!

Y’all it is a gorgeous BLUE day here in GA. There’s a lot of work to do-including dealing with the 49.5%+ of people who think Trump and his cronies are good for the world… but today, I finally feel like we can rest for a day. They were defeated across all lines of government, Mitch is out as Majority Leader…
It’s a good day today. Stacey Abrams is a badass. I had a good cry at 2AM after waking up to check the numbers, and I am celebrating.

    • Midnight@theOasis says:

Thank you Georgia. So very thankful for helping to bring about change. Let’s hope Ossof holds on to win and there are no automatic recounts. I read this on another site and thought it was so appropriate:
“ The irony, of course, is that Warnock the good reverend and Ossoff the young idealist will do more for the hate-filled, grievance-filled, struggling whites of Georgia than Trump and these two craven suck ups would ever do.”

      • Christin says:

That quote is so spot on. Hard to understand why so many vote so strongly against their own interests. Dems were responsible for enormous social and economic milestones in the 20th century that directly benefited those who are not mega-wealthy.

      • BeanieBean says:

Brilliant! It’s a brand new day!

      • notpretentious says:

Let me just say that as a Georgian, I did my part and voted for democracy. And thank God that McConnell is out! Still waiting on Ossoff’s win to be confirmed. Both of the Democratic candidates have worked so hard. Do y’all remember when Purdue declined to debate Ossoff, lol! He would have had his a** handed to him indeed. Republican cowardice in full view!

    • Megs says:

So proud of Georgia. My family is right across the border in ‘Bama, so you give me hope that one day, maybe, they can have better representation. I still can’t get over Tuberville defeating Jones.

      • Soupie says:

Mercenary Barbie LOST!! Praying for the John Lewis Democrat’s victory. I am a recent Bama transplant. Doug Jones for AG???

    • Seraphina says:

I kept watching last night for numbers – for anything and every source was cautious of predictions. Maybe due to the fiasco of November????

    • B n A fn says:

Thank God the voters in GA came through. Now we have to look out for the proud boys, 45 goons in their yellow shirts, hats or bandana, ect. Yesterday they promised to burn down DC. Anything happens in DC today it’s 45 goons they are threatening violence. Stay safe everyone, we will get through this and hopefully don the con will go to jail in due time, and take Moscow Mitch with you.
Thank you Stacy Abraham, thank you, job well done.

      • Soupie says:

These “real Americans,” these Proud Boys – think they’re the only ones who have a right to a voice and a right to power. It’s so sickening. We’re in for a ride people. Don’t think 2021 and beyond is going to be any easier than 2020 – that’s my prediction. Unfortunately.

She’s a force to be reckoned with.

      • Traveler says:

        Absolutely!!!

      • Larisa says:

Hmm… Why just 2020? 🙂 I know 2021 just bagun, but I think there won’t be many things in 2021 that will be as consequential as this, especially if Ossoff wins, for America.

      • Liz version 700 says:

Absolutely! The Queen! And she is in Trumps head so bad. Rent free occupancy. All of the strong leaders in GA who made this happen I thank you.

      • Liz version 700 says:

Ladies and Gentlemen we made some damn good trouble last night! Thank you everyone who worked, sent $$, prayed, drove people to vote you saved this country. The turtle let Trump run riot over the country and now he is going down with him. And I am so so glad Warnock shoved those racist anti-black church ads straight in the fake flannel lady’s face!

      • Thirtynine says:

Can not admire her more. Powerful woman of change. Congratulations! Here’s hoping you get both candidates confirmed!

    • H says:

Speaking as another Hufflepuff, thank you Liz, Georgia and our Queen Stacey Abrams.

I went to bed at 11pm with no clear winner, although Warnock looked good and woke up this morning to joyous news. I HATE Mitch McConnell (even more so than Trump, which is saying something) and I am so happy that turtle is gone as Majority Leader.

2021 is looking so much better than 2020. President Joe Biden and now the Dems have the Senate. Now, if I could just get our FL governor to get the vaccine roll out happening properly, things would be amazing.

      • Ponchorella says:

More thanks to Georgia from your turdly neighbor to the south, Floriduh. Thank you for your huge part in saving our nation. Thank you Stacy Abrams! Thank you everyone who donated, knocked doors, made calls, sent postcards, and all the other hard work it took. I am so happy that Mitch is finally going to pay a price for what he has done to this country. I hate that it was so close, but I hope new voters realize their power and stay involved. I look forward to seeing Stacy taking her rightful place as governor in 2 years. I also hope Loeffler gets investigated for her early pandemic stock trades. Happy new year, ’bitchies!

We have a lot of cleaning up to do around here, fellow Americans. Let’s start by taking out the trash!

    • Traveler says:

People of Georgia, the nation owes you a debt of gratitude!!!

    • elfie says:

I’m so proud and happy for Georgia today. Stacy is a QUEEN amongst mortals, can’t believe what y’all accomplished with her leadership. Love and happiness to all Georgians today!

Am soo happy to see this – it gives me hope that in the UK we can get our Dump wannabe out this year.

You guys are really getting all the new year joy 🙂

    • Esmom says:

I was driving home from the grocery store early this morning and realized I was the most relaxed and happy and light than I have been in years. It was pretty close to the feeling I had in 2008 when Obama was elected. Just pure elation, feeling like we are reclaiming our country from the grip of so much corruption and evil and sheer indifference to anyone but the 1%.

      • Anna says:

So deeply grateful to MVP Stacey Abrams and the organizers and people of Georgia and Honorable Ancestor John Lewis and all who came through to make this happen! Agree with you @Esmom I feel so much lighter today. Was in a deep depressive slump after the start of the new year, and now I’m in the studio creating and listening to jazz and singing again!

        From Time today:
“…organizers in Georgia who helped register more than 800,000 new voters since Abrams lost the governor’s race; of those registered to vote after Nov. 2018, about half are people of color and 45% are under 30—both demographics that tend to lean Democrat.”
“In particular, there were many Black women—such as advocates Nsé Ufot, Helen Butler, Deborah Scott and Tamieka Atkins—involved in Democratic voter registration and motivation efforts in the still too-close-to-call state.”

Honoring our Black women leaders who have fought the good fight for generations including Sojourner Truth, Fannie Lou Hamer, Septima Clark, Ella Baker…the list goes on and on.

Finally can breathe again…well, I will fully after Jan. 20 and as long as Biden-Harris do the right thing by we the people and *especially do the right thing by Black women*. So tired of us always saving this damn country only to still have to bear the weight of medical discrimination and every other kind of bigotry and bias. Do right by Black women (and I saw that to *everyone*).

  3. AmyB says:

Oh 2021 – you are looking good so far!!!!

    • lanne says:

Amen to that! I was in line to vote yesterday at 6:45 am and it took 45 minutes— the line was already down the block by the time I left. Glory hallelujah!

      • dewdrop says:

record turnouts! i voted up in cherokee county last thursday, the line wrapped around the building twice in the rain, stood in line for over 2 hours.
it was a beautiful sight to see.
the right to vote is singlehandedly one of the most powerful rights we have, and look at us flexing out here.
bless stacey abrams, she empowered us all.

      • Darla says:

        Thank you!

      • Midnight@theOasis says:

@dewdrop. I never want to hear anyone ever again say voting doesn’t matter. The power of the vote is everything.

      • Soupie says:

Oh but you should see all the right wing TV nuts talking about early voting ballots and how we went door to door in heavily Democrat areas getting people to fill out their ballots and send them in. They need to just call themselves the Right Wing Cult Party.

But they have the right to gerrymander and pull all other kinds of shit and that’s perfectly OK!! You know, because THEY’RE the GOD party they’re the RELIGION party, they’re the fine upstanding citizen party – it makes me sick. Delusional violent hypocrites.

    • Eleonora says:

      Good job.

Not an Anerican, so not sure what it means, but guessing peaches are a Georgian thing. Well done 🙂

      • Christin says:

For non-US southerners – Georgia is nicknamed the Peach State because they produce superior peaches. Literally.

Oh, and our outgoing president once married a “Georgia peach” (a tabloid nickname for Marla). I just thought of that!

  5. Bettyrose says:

Stacey Abrams has saved this nation. How is it possible to properly thank her? She’ll be president someday no doubt, but hopefully will get her rightful spot as governor sooner than that.

    • Snazzy says:

She definitely deserves some kind of public recognition – an award, medal, something! Then the Dems need to put her in charge of voter registration nation wide so she can help local parties fix this problem everywhere and make US elections more representative of the population. Or at least as much as possible with the bonkers system in place

      • Southern Fried says:

National Stacey Abrams Day sounds good to me.

      • Oh_Hey says:

The DNC needs to be on notice. Stacy should be in charter over there tomorrow so she can fix some of the leftover mess (loosing house seats and state houses) from this year’s election.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

I’d like to see that worthless Tom Perez out on his useless ass, and have Stacey take over leadership of the DNC.

She is a GODDESS. A true badass that takes NO crap. I was lucky enough to get to talk to her when she was here on her book tour (you got a copy of the book for the price of admission to the chat). She is smart as a whip, funny, gracious, committed to what she’s doing… she made a lifelong cheerleader in me, for sure!

    • Alexandria says:

I’m not American and I’d want to thank her. Amazing.

      • Carrie says:

Strongly agree with you. I’m not American either but recognise a legend when I see one. There’s a movie to be made here. What a role model.

      • Bettyrose says:

I was just thinking HBO has probably already begun early production on a movie.

    • MyName says:

I have never given money to a political party/group before.

I gave money to her. Several times. She is an amazing woman and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

    • Lightpurple says:

I was honored to meet this Goddess 8 years ago when the JFK Library gave her the New Frontier Fenn award. Caroline Kennedy couldn’t praise her enough back then. I pray she turns her watchful eye to the mandatory, census-driven redistricting that happens between now and 2022. Thank you, Stacey. Thank you, Georgia.

    • Lucy2 says:

Whatever she wants to do- we have to support her. Whether it’s continue something like Fair Fight, run for governor again, or go national/federal, we must support her.
Personally, I would love to see her as head of the DNC, instituting her playbook in every state in the nation, but she deserves whatever she wants.
After what happened to her in the governors race, so many people would’ve been disgusted and given up, but she turned around, got to work, and with the help of other organizers, volunteers, and voters, flipped the entire state blue in two of the most crucial elections in history.

      • Midnight@theOasis says:

Agree. Would love to see Stacye as head of the DNC. Dems desperately need her to hold on and not lose seats in the 2022 mid-terms which usually happens.

      • whatWHAT? says:

“Personally, I would love to see her as head of the DNC, instituting her playbook in every state in the nation”

THIS, right here. but I also agree she should get whatever she wants. amazing woman.

    • LucyB says:

Her entire body (not just her face) needs to be chiselled into the side of a mountain…say, maybe, Stone Mountain!

      • BeanieBean says:

Whoo! That would blow some minds!

      • Chicken says:

If they carved Stacey Abrams into Stone Mountain, they could create a whole new laser show that I would actually attend (I grew up in view of Stone Mountain and went to many a laser show as a kid, and holy cow, were those things racist and abhorrent).

    • Traveler says:

      I’m ready for President Abrams.
This woman gets things done and supports people of integrity.
Congratulations to her for her success and a big congratulations to Senator Warnock!
Let there soon be the need to congratulate Senator Ossoff too.

    • Anna says:

Biden-Harris better give her whatever she wants. End of story.

  6. cassandra says:

I feel the first tiny glimmer of hope! If we can just get through the rest of today’s upcoming nonsense. I’m interested to see how many Senators really object to the electoral votes now.

    Adios Majority Mitch!

    • Noodle says:

@cassandra, YES! I went to bed last night at 11pm PT, where the Perdue/Ossoff race was neck and neck. It seemed like it was going back and forth, and literally like 1,000 votes apart. I can’t tell you the relief I feel this morning. This California girl wants to cry!! Now I turn my attention to the antics of Congress, and what will happen in DC with protests. i fear we have dark days ahead, but I celebrate that the Georgia peaches are in bloom early this year!

    • whatWHAT? says:

I heard a news report on the radio this AM that Rafael and his traitor cohorts are now NOT planning to object.

      • H says:

Cruz is an opportunist, he knows which way the wind is blowing. He’s not going to throw away his shot for the presidency in 2024 – not that he’ll ever get it.

      • Esmom says:

Oh wow, I was wondering if the GA race results would impact their treasonous shenanigans.

      • lucy2 says:

        Interesting.
I had a feeling, seeing the results last night, that this was going to scare the sh!t out of some of them, and they’d be rats deserting a sinking ship.

      • Becks1 says:

They just objected to Arizona AND got a standing ovation. What a shitshow this is. The joint session had to be disbanded, the Senate returns to its chamber, there’s a debate, and then both chambers vote. We’re going to do this how many times???

McConnell – come get your people. You keep them in lockstep with you 99.999% of the time and THIS is the time you lose your grip?!??

  7. Sa says:

How corrupt does a republican candidate have to be? It makes me so mad that these are close races. And who are these people splitting their ballots?

I am happy, I’m just also disgusted that so many people voted for senators who profited off of their constituents getting sick and dying.

    • Southern Fried says:

I’m think voting machines have been tampered with and we won due to overwhelming voter turnout foiling that.

    • Josie Bean says:

It was disappointing that the races were so close – how I would love to have seen a landslide of blue votes which would have shown Trump what the people of Georgia thought of him and his cronies.

But I too am so very happy and I love the people of Georgia who worked so hard to elect 2 Democratic senators (I am assuming Ossoff will ultimately win).

    • GuestwithCat says:

It was shockingly close. Which shows the road ahead for Democrats won’t be easy. We aren’t in Georgia but our family donated everything we could spare to both candidates campaigns through Act Blue. It wasn’t a grandiose amount each time, because we’re supporting extended family through unemployment and still feeding and vetting a huge number of feral cats and indoor cats. Still, it was something toward feeling we could help from a distance.

We are all exhausted here from staying up watching the returns come in and marveling at all the work Ms Abrams did to get this voter turnout, especially black voter participation, to this unprecedented level.

I’m so exhausted I can’t even finish my train of thought.

      • Traveler says:

We donated what we could to both candidates also. Not living in Georgia, so not able to vote, it was the only thing we could do to help.

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, Perdue and Loeffler were so vile so I tend to think that people weren’t voting for them as much as they were voting against a Black man and a Jewish man. And against their own twisted view of what Dems stand for. Maybe once they see that these guys aren’t “radical socialists” they will ease up on the knee jerk partisanship. Maybe the Trump spell will finally break. I don’t know.

  8. Southern Fried says:

This means we can make the lives of all marginalized peoples better. We can get COVID under control and save countless lives. We can do much better feeding the hungry. And, AND, how much fun will it be seeing Kamala sprinting in her Converse to the lecturn to break any tie votes. We need a special theme song for that.

  9. BlueSky says:

My sister and her husband voted early! So happy to see this!

  10. TeaForTwo says:

Today is a good day in America. Yes, much work lies ahead, but I am taking today to finally lay down the load of anxiety I have been carrying since 2016 and simply celebrate. Stacey Abrams is worthy of a Nobel Peace Prize IMO.

  11. Jane Doe says:

Stacey Abrams is a study in focus, organizing and fortitude. Her governorship was stolen by a white supremacist committing voter fraud and she worked to ensure that wouldn’t happen for subsequent candidates in Georgia. She deserves all the accolades.
Black women imagine progressive futures that others can’t even conceive of. People stay “congratulating” accomplished Black women by proposing new monumental taxing work for us, immediately after we have successfully moved mountains. Give credit where credit is due, and stop proposing narratives for us that suit your agenda, we aren’t mules. She is so accomplished. Why are people saying what she “should” do next?

    • sunny says:

Hell yes to all of this. The saviour narrative on black women is exhausting. Black women are amazing but the saviour narrative is terrible and is used by white people to not own their bs. Like why are so many of you voting for truly vile humans?

Perdue and Loffler are just the most awful people. I mean, both made profit off the pandemic. That is fully wild.

This is an incredible win for organizers who have been doing the damn work for 10 years. And yes Abrams is truly an amazing human and so inspiring but I wish people would stop trying to push heading the DNC leadership on her. Let her choose her own path and if that path isn’t cleaning up the mess of the DNC, chill. She owes you nothing.

On a personal note, I am laughing so hard about this election because Trump might be destroying the GOP as he leave office with his antics and well its *chef’s kiss*

    • Darla says:

Yeah, I am so tired of people tweeting “Make her DNC chair!”. Um, no. That’s a dead end thankless job. Support her in whatever she wants for herself next. She’s not the person you call in to “clean this up” next. It’s unbelievable. They mean well I guess? but wake up. And I personally don’t think you’re looking at a future DNC chair. I think you’re likely seeing a future president. But that’s her choice too. She’s earned big capital. If she wants to be President, my question will be “where do I donate”? If she wants to be governor my question will be “where do I donate?” If she wants to write more novels my question will be “where can I buy them”?

      • Becks1 says:

YES! I said something similar down below. People are full of what ideas about what she “should” do next but what she should do is whatever the eff she wants, because she is damn good at whatever she does and people need to let her choose her own path without any added pressure. She gave the Dems Georgia, she really doesn’t owe the DNC a damn thing.

      • Anna says:

        This @Darla x100000000

      • jwoolman says:

I’d rather see her teach master classes on how they did it on Youtube or something similar.

    • Anna says:

      Thank you!!!! @Jane Doe This x 10000000000

  12. Solace says:

I’m in awe of Stacey Abrams. She’s the leader of the dem party, for me. All movements are built on the backs of women, esp WOC who have come forward remarkably. These women need to be celebrated and protected. Today tells me there’s hope.

  13. tempest prognosticator says:

    Thank you Georgia! 🍑🍑🍑

  14. Southern Fried says:

Anyone else follow SNL’s Leslie Jones on Twitter last night during returns coverage? Her lusting for Steve Kornaki took away most of my stress.

    • FHMom says:

Do you know Kornaki does sports numbers, also? My son was watching football last weekend and he was on. I’m convinced he is a nerdy genius.

      • Noodle says:

@fhmom, the NFL broadcasts have brought him in for statistical analysis. I’m not a numbers person at all, but I enjoy watching his brain work and seeing his passion and genius come out. He makes the NFL commentary so much more enjoyable!!

  15. Becks1 says:

The first black Democratic Senator from the South. Congratulations, Senator Warnock!

One of the things I love about Abrams – and you saw this with Harris too a year or so ago* – is that so many people had ideas about what she “should” do – she should run for Senate, she should be head of the DNC, she should have been Biden’s running mate (well maybe) – and she said “nah, I’ve got a better idea.” And her better idea delivered Georgia for Biden and has delivered the first black Democratic Senator from the South, first Dem GA Senator since 2000, and has very likely handed the Senate itself to Biden. What a stunning job.

*(I feel like this time a year or so ago, people were full of suggestions for Harris – she should endorse this person or that person, they should consider her for AG, she should do XYZ – when she endorsed Biden, some people weren’t happy, but who’s having the last laugh? The first African-American, Asian-American, female Vice President.)

    • Noodle says:

I hope she is able to get a little downtime now before taking on her next endeavors, whatever they may be. She went straight from hardcore campaigning for Biden/Harris to hardcore campaigning for our new Senators. Even superheroes need rest once in a while.
She deserves some rest and relaxation, and maybe some quality Bridgerton binge.

  16. Dana Dayen says:

Hope the Dems get control of the Senate so they don’t have the easy out of blaming the Republicans for not passing progressive legislation

    • TeaForTwo says:

‘Dems’ is a give away Republican code word to me. It’s right up there with lib(tards) and Rona. Just sayin.

      • goofpuff says:

        oh 100%

      • Becks1 says:

What? I say Dems all the time, and I’m a pretty hardcore Democrat. I don’t say “libs” though. I don’t think its a Republican code word at all.

      • TeaForTwo says:

It absolutely is a code word. Read, watch, learn.

      • Becks1 says:

I read, watch, and learn all the time, thanks for the patronizing “tone” though, and I still don’t think its a code word to me. (you said it was a code word TO YOU, I am disagreeing with that TO ME.)

      • lucy2 says:

Really? I’m a Democrat and I type Dems a lot to abbreviate.

    • Midnight@theOasis says:

Until the filibuster is abolished (you know where it takes 60 votes to pass legislation), the “Dems” won’t be able to pass anything without cooperation from Republicans.

  17. manda says:

This is such wonderful news! I cried tears of joy this morning, which sounds extreme (I mean, I never thought I’d find myself in this emotional place), but it is true. I know that there is still so much more to do and accomplish but this feels so good. Thank goodness for Stacey Abrams!

    • Darla says:

I was crying in the middle of the night. When Dave Wasserman tweeted “I’ve seen enough…Warnock has defeated Loeffler” I started.

      • FHMom says:

Loeffler is the worst. I was praying for this.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

I was on Twitter in @Angry_Staffer’s feed, and all he tweeted with Wasserman’s tweet was “BOOM”! I let out such a yell I woke up my dad lol. After this, I finally felt I could go to sleep.

        Thank You GEORGIA!!!

      • Colleen says:

Same. The first Wasserman Tweet was when I started sobbing too.

      • KhaoManee says:

I couldn’t take the suspense and went to bed early. Woke up to the wonderful news and started bawling. Went outside, looked up at the sky and said thank you to everyone who made this happen. The actual air feels different this morning. Clean and crisp and full of HOPE for the first time in four years. It’s an amazing feeling!

    • Esmom says:

I cried, too. Stacey Abrams is a queen, a force of nature. She is amazing and the relentless work she and others like LaTosha Brown have done is inspiring and humbling. Their energy and optimism could power an entire city.

  18. S808 says:

I’ll never get over how she got screwed out of governorship and instead of doing what anyone else suggested, she tackled the real problem: voter suppression. God bless Stacey, her team and all the grass roots organizations that put in the time and work to reach voters politicians probably never even bothered to try to reach.

  19. Jayna says:

What a rollercoaster of a night. To go from thinking we lost to gaining and gaining, to Warnock’s win. There were screams of joy going on in my house as the night progressed. Seeing Ossoff pull back to neck and neck, and then hearing the predictions he was looking good to win with what was left to come in, I was bouncing off the walls. Wow! Warnock’s speech had me in tears. I didn’t go to bed until 1:30 p.m.

What a wild night. I won’t rest until Ossoff is declared winner, but it looks good.

  20. TIFFANY says:

    Stacy Abrams

    LaTosha Brown

    Clift Albright

Native, Latino and Asian residents who turned out in record number, I don’t know who lead your grassroot but I will look it up.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

    • Tiffany says:

Oh, and I completely forgot to thank every member of the Atlanta Dream basketball team who raised now Senator Elect Warnock’s national profile. Y’all did the Lord’s work.

    • windyriver says:

Bee Nguyen, daughter of Vietnamese immigrants, who actually now holds Stacy Abrams former seat in the Georgia Legislature, is one of the people who worked to get the vote out among Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders. I’m sure there are many more among all constituencies.

Thank you to every one of you.

  21. Izzy says:

Having to deal with Trump’s lunacy trying to steal the election is karma coming for Brian Kemp for screwing Stacey Abrams out of the governorship. Hope he’s having fun dealing with that!

  22. Mrs. Smith says:

    Thank you Georgia!!!!

  23. Digital Unicorn says:

Twitter is all over Mitch McConnell’s ass – LOL. He is OUT and he has Patient Zero to thank for it and himself with his pitiful excuses over COVID relief.

Moscow Mitch should just retire now as the chickens are def roosting.

  24. Lucy2 says:

Thank you to everyone who made this happen! I donated and volunteered, but kept my expectations very low. Last night when it started to turn blue, I ended up being awake until 2 AM watching the results!
This is a game changer. The Democrats will control the White House, the Senate, and the house. Heads of all of the Senate committees will no longer be led by Republicans. Cabinet Nominees will pass. A supreme court nominee will pass. Actual COVID relief will pass.
We have two years. Hopefully 4 and beyond, we’ve got to make this two years count, and fast.

    • B n A fn says:

I got about one hour sleep last night and I’m so excited today I’m not even sleepy now.

    • Ponchorella says:

We need to make DC a state, to start with.

      • lucy2 says:

And Puerto Rico, if they want it.
There is so much damn work to do, it’s unbelievable. Covid relief, vaccine distribution, and voting rights have to be top priority, so the GOP can’t suppress their way to 2022.

    • laura-j says:

My thoughts exactly we best make these two years count! I donated and voluteered too. Stacy Abrams is the best! I hope she is either given a cabinet post or basically whatever she wants. Black women saved us and we better not forget it.

I saw that the last time a sitting president lost the presidency, house and senate was Hoover during the depression. That tracks.

  25. Midnight@theOasis says:

And there are crazy Bernie bros claiming Bernie made this possible. WTF???

    • Darla says:

LOL I just ignore them. They are irrelevant now, and they know it, and that’s their worst fear. They only have power when Democrats don’t.

    • Veronica S. says:

I think Bernie likely helped in the sense that he adamantly was fighting for those $2000 checks for Americans – in sharp contrast to McConnell’s cold, vicious disregard for the American people. It emphasized the vast divide in what side actually has people in it who are working to better the average working American (thought certainly not enough of them) at a key time in the runup to the election. Giving him credit for the entire win though, uh…not so much. The voters of Georgia, empowered by Abrams and other grassroots organizers, are who made this possible.

      • Ponchorella says:

It is insane that almost half of the people who voted in Georgia voted against 2k stimulus checks. Unbelievable!

  26. Colleen says:

As soon as Wasserman called it for Rev. Warnock, I burst into tears. I went to bed still sobbing at 1am after he called it for Ossoff. I can’t believe the 2020 nightmare election is finally over. Thank you, Stacey Abrams. Thank you, LaTosha Brown. Thank you, everyone who worked so hard to GOTV. Thank you, Georgia!!!!

Now we have two years to roll up our sleeves and get to work. The GOP propaganda machine will be at Tan Suit Death Panels level for the next two years and we have to be ready to counter it.

  27. KhaoManee says:

Hallelujah!!! Thank you Georgia!!! You saved all our asses! 🙏💙

  28. Seraphina says:

THIS is democracy in action. From the grassroots activism to the very top. Well done Georgia. Thank you for standing up to tyranny. When those in power won’t do what is right then it falls on us, the voters, to show them our displeasure. I am looking forward to the pink slips that will be handed out.

  29. Edna says:

Thank you Georgia voters, Stacey Abrams and all those who made this possible.

People of color (especially women of color) are most negatively impacted and bear the brunt of this anti American Republican nonsense. And POC know they have to do what they can to survive. To do their very best to get people elected into office who may help in someway to keep them from drowning. No one is deluded to believe that Democrats are saviors. But when you see clearly the evil emanating from Republicans you definitely know which side you need to back in order to have a sliver of hope. I just pray for the day when a majority of white people join us and not work against us in order to form that more perfect Union.

    • Tiffany says:

      Black people. Black women.

This …of color troupe needs to stop and it shows that devaluing Black people, especially Black women is always the goal.

      • Midnight@theOasis says:

It was Native Americans who made the difference in Arizona to turn the state blue and elect two Dems to the Senate. No one is devaluing black people/black women by acknowledging other people of color who contribute to the effort.

      • Tiffany says:

Then say the skin color. Black, Natives, Asian, Latino.

People of color is a BS excuse for a monolith when we are anything but.

But sure, continue to tell on yourself.

      • Kalana says:

But I think we should say it specifically instead of an umbrella term like POC. It blurs the contributions and efforts of the specific groups and can hurt their chances of being treated as important voting blocs.

      • Jane Doe says:

Agreed. People need to stop using POC when they mean Black and and WOC when they mean Black women.

  30. MaryContrary says:

And don’t forget-Jon Osoff is also Jewish. That a black man and a Jew are Georgia’s senators is amazing!

    • A says:

God, what a nightmare for the white supremacists in Georgia LMAO!! I’m having the best time laughing at their tears. Fuck ’em.

  31. Veronica S. says:

Hoping people in this country don’t forget whose work handed us this victory – all of those people doing grassroots campaigning, who fought tirelessly to overcome voter suppression, and of course, Miss Abrams, whose gubernatorial run in 2022 I will happily throw any scrap of money I have at. People in other contested states would be wise to study her work and try to replicate those results.

Don’t know if I skimmed over it in the post, but Warnock’s win isn’t just important in the sense that it’s been twenty years since a Democrat took a Georgia seat, but it’s also the first time in the state’s history a black American has held a Senate position there. A long overdue victory, if anything.

    • A says:

I think Senator-elect(?) Warnock is actually the first black American in the south to win a senate seat in American history.

  32. Cindy says:

    1) I’m a Georgia resident and voted Warnock / Ossoff. I am a moderate and very much planned to vote Warnock / Perdue until recently.
    2) I am not a Stacey Abrams fan. I am not discounting her contributions, but her likability is overstated in the national media.
I say this not to delve into a political discussion, but just a FYI that things on the ground in Georgia are still very much up-in-the-air in regard to future races. Lots of moderates here looking for middle-ground.
And YAY that Loeffler is OUT!! She is unrecognizable to friends that have known her for years. A wretched, misguided woman.

    • H says:

Loeffler let money, power and her own ego bring her down. I am most happy about her loss. I did a dance this morning when I found out she lost. When she said she understood middle-class Americans who live paycheck-to-paycheck, I laughed. You’ve got like 6 mansions, lady. So, b*itch, sit down and now go back to one of them.

BTW, I’m a moderate but I LOVE Stacey Abrams.

    • Tiffany says:

      You a Republican, Cindy.

      • Cindy says:

Haha whoa now, at least I was a Democrat in Dekalb yesterday when it counted 🙂

I should clarify my thoughts on Abrams, because I actually voted for her in 2018. I lost my respect for Abrams when she had no grace in defeat and refused to concede. It was miserable. Her behavior then is not fully dissimilar to what’s happening now. The refusal to concede was disruptive then, it’s disruptive now, and it’s just not easily forgotten.

      • Lemons says:

@Cindy, she should not have conceded because Kemp stole the election. THANKS to her refusal to concede and shedding light on the issue of voter suppression as well as her actions to combat it, we have the wins we do today.

Perdue is an absolutely disgusting man and the fact that you were ready to vote from “until recently” speaks volumes. Nothing wrong with being wrong, but do your best to educate yourself on why as well.

      • Cindy says:

@Lemons I’m saying these things as a favor to well-intentioned people on the far left. Please stop propelling the narrative that elections can be stolen; everyone is exhausted by that Trump-like rhetoric and innuendo.

    • Noodle says:

@Cindy, can I ask in earnest, what specifically swayed your vote to Ossoff and away from Perdue? That is a big jump, and I’m interested to hear what was the tipping point.

      • Cindy says:

Yes, @Noodle, I can! It’s because if you put politics aside, Perdue has a huge amount of intellectual capital in regard to growing businesses in the context of a global economy. If the world was a chess board, you’d want him on your side. Unfortunately, now is not a time when you can simply put politics aside. Perdue made the choice to hitch his wagon to Trump, and his continued support of Trump these last few weeks only reaffirmed that. Ossoff is a smart guy, so I’m hopeful, but he does not have the life or business experience of Warnock or Perdue.

      • Noodle says:

@cindy, thank you for explaining it to me. I appreciate that you balanced the intellectual capital Perdue brings, with the political landscape we need right now. I wondered why Warnock was solidly ahead, and why Ossoff wasn’t tracking as solidly, but this helps me understand how some thoughtful voters (beyond just voters who vote along party-lines) weighed their choices.

      • Veronica S. says:

Tribalism is sucking intellectual capitalism out of both sides. My state used to have a really great Republican senator in the 2000s who was one of the few that voiced concerns about the Patriot Act and was actually pretty economically balanced, but he switched parties after he saw where the direction of the Republican party was going and got knocked out. Replaced by a total idiot of course. 9_9

  33. aang says:

Calling my Reps to talk about DC and Puerto Rican (if they want it) statehood. Let’s not waste this chance!

  34. Leah says:

Yes, yes! Good for you Georgia and for us.

Knocking Mitch down a few pegs is going to be delicious to watch.

Now, they need to make DC and PR into states. That will destroy the republicans forever. Heh heh.

  35. Nicole says:

Oh please, please please! Congratulations to Warnock and keeping my fingers crossed for Offoff!

  36. Moorele says:

Thank you thank you thank you Georgia !!!! 🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑

  37. Jaded says:

Thank you Georgia and congratulations from Canada!! Stacey Abrams is a total rock star!!!

  38. TheOriginalMia says:

Could barely sleep last night. Finally saw that Warnock & Ossoff were in the lead at 2:15am. I slept like a baby. We’ve been working for so long to turn GA Blue and we did it! I’m so excited. I’m so proud of my fellow Georgians, Dems, of course, but also those Independents and Republicans, who put country over party. Thank you! We are blue!!!! Reverend Warnock & Jon Ossoff are going to honor the legacy of John Lewis. They’ll make us proud.

  39. L4frimaire says:

Ossoff is going to get it and will be so happy to see Voldemort Mitch McConnell disappear. He should lose his leadership position too. He was so obvious and gleeful about how he was going to wreck and block Biden’s term. The Dems need to steamroll ahead with their agenda because who knows if they’ll hold on to majorities in 2022. They need to adapt Abrams strategy for all 50 states. The GOP have their authoritarian playbook even if Trump is gone.

  40. What...now? says:

I cannot say this enough: THANK YOU, GEORGIA!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Georgians, you have literally saved this country and probably a good deal of the world, too!

The “devil went down to Georgia” and once again got his ass kicked by the good people of Georgia standing strong and saying, “Not today, Satan, not today!”

The people of this country owe you so much!

And as for our new Senator Warnock — Congrats!! History making election! Amazing! And Jon Ossoff — finally, a senator who is not 900 years old! Let’s get some progress happening!

Men and women of color have once again saved this nation from itself, and I will be forever grateful to people like Stacy Abrams, her team and all the Georgians who got together and made this work.

  41. Nikki* says:

I’m not jinxing anything until it’s set, but SO HAPPY, SO HAPPY, SO HAPPY!!!! My daughter asked a pregnant friend to name her daughter Georgia!! 🙂

  42. Regina Falangie says:

    PHEW!!!!!!! Thank you 💙🇺🇸

  43. Ladiabla says:

Thank you, thank you to Stacey Abrams and the people of Georgia!! 🍑🧡

  44. Alidorival says:

Yes!! Georgia came through once again. Thank you peaches! Right now though, the idiots are trying to storm the capitol, stoked by their dumbander in chief. smdh.

  45. Rise & Shine says:

YAY! Been sending all love to Georgia, and alright, they did it. Thank you to all there that helped, Stacy, and congrats to the wonderful Warnock! Looks like our Ossoff has it too. Some good news on a very bleak day.

  46. Leah says:

What was joyful turned to anger with the storming of the Capitol building.

This is not the America I know. Assaulting Capitol police and hunting down members of the legislature is not what America stands for.

    Completely upsetting.

    • heygingersnaps says:

Capitol police calmly open the barriers to let those domestic terrorists in and some of them were even letting these domestic terrorists take a selfie with them.
